What is Weight Training?

Weight training is also known as resistance training. Weight training involves using different types of resistance to help strengthen the body such as dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells and resistance bands. The muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones are seen to have the most positive benefits after a weight training program has been consistently implemented in one’s lifestyle. Weight training can benefit everyone, as long as training techniques are proper.

The Benefits

  • It improves an individuals capacity to perform everyday tasks, such as lifting a box, carrying heavy groceries, or even walking to class.
  • It improves mental health by elevating the level of endorphins in the brain and therefore increases an individuals mood.
  • It is important for bone growth and maintaining bone density throughout an individuals life.
  • It can help to burn calories which will assist you in losing or maintaining weight.
  • It increases the strength of the muscles, tendons, and connective tissues, which reduces the risk of injury.

Biomechanics (how the body moves) will also progress. Improved biomechanics such as balance, flexibility, coordination, and muscular structure will help posture as well as decrease the likelihood of falling, which is very important as we get older.
