4. Strategies

The goal of any sport is to outscore your opponent and win the game. To increase the chances of this happening a team should utilize different formations, tactics, and execute different strategies during the game. The use of different plays and strategies in Ultimate can be an important factor to increase a teams success. Below are two common strategies used in Ultimate.

The Horizontal Stack
This is an extremely common offensive strategy used in Ultimate. There are two main positions to consider when using the Horizontal stack:

  • The handlers: are experienced players who feel comfortable having possession and throwing the frisbee. Usually there are three handlers during the Horizontal Stack.
  • The cutters: consist of fours players, two out on the left hand side and two on the right hand side of the field. There job is to cut and dump the frisbee, helping the team advance up the field.

The Vertical Stack
This is another offensive strategy used in Ultimate, which can be very effective to advancing a team up the field. The goal of the Vertical Stack is to organize the players in a vertical line in the middle of the field. Individually, players will attempt to cut from the line and there defender, eventually getting open to receive the frisbee.
