1. Benefits of Group Exercise

When it comes to exercise, individuals often experience many challenges such as a lack of time, low confidence levels, a decrease in motivation or they may not have a clear understanding of how to achieve their goals. Fortunately, many gyms and even online platforms offer group fitness classes that make it more enjoyable to exercise. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced individual, the benefits of group exercise are the same for everyone.

Quality of Life

One of the main benefits of exercise is improving one’s quality of life. However, research into group exercise shows there are also strength in numbers. A study published by The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association reported that individuals who participated in regular group fitness classes were more likely to decrease their level of perceived stress and increase their physical, mental, and emotional quality of life compared to those who exercised by themselves or not at all.

Motivation

Often in a group setting individuals will tend to push themselves harder and will try and compete with those around them. A study published by the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, found that when individuals worked with a partner, they were able to increase their plank time, compared to those who worked alone.

Accountability

Exercising in a group environment allows an individual to develop relationships with others and as a result people start to hold each other accountable. One study found that 95% of participants who took part in a weight loss and maintenance program with a friend completed it, compared to only 76% who completed it alone.

Commitment

One of the biggest challenges of exercise is sticking to a consistent routine and staying committed. However, when you are exercising with a group there is an increase in encouragement from the instructors and others. Additionally, a study published in the Journal of Social Sciences found that individuals tend to gravitate towards the exercise behaviors of those around them. Therefore, if an individual sees someone is working harder and faster, they are more inclined to do the same.

Enjoyable

The best part of a group exercise class is that it’s fun! Whether it is the people, the instructor, or the music, a group environment can guarantee a great atmosphere!
