4. Defending

Shielding
In the game of soccer, the ability to keep possession of the ball is one of the most important aspects of the game. A team cannot score without the ball. Players must be able to keep the ball under control and prevent opponents from taking the ball away. One technique used to protect the ball is shielding. When shielding:

  • The player must position his or her body between the ball and the opponent while keeping possession of the ball.
  • The player must be aware of the opponent’s movements and respond accordingly.

Tackling
While shielding assists the player in keeping possession of the ball, tackling skills allow the player to take the ball away from the opponent. The central idea of tackling is dispossessing the opponent who has control of the ball using different techniques. As a general rule, a player must be aware of the opponent’s position and intention and try to anticipate a position to challenge the ball. The less time and space a player gives the opponent to think and move, the easier it is to take the ball away. However, a player must be careful not to overcommit and be easily dribbled by the opponent. To tackle:

  • Get close but not too close to your opponent
  • Keep your eye on the ball
  • Timing is everything. If the opponent has a heavy touch attempt to tackle them immediately, if not bide your time.
  • Lock your ankle and have a low center of gravity
  • Fully commit to the tackle, once the time is right
