4. Georgia-Based Physical Activity, Recreation & Sport Resources

Within the state of Georgia, there are several physical activity resources available to individuals with disabilities. On the campus of the University of Georgia, there are exercise specialists within the department of Kinesiology who are available to discuss options with you. Please contact your PEDB instructor regarding this.

In the Athens area, there are also resources that are designed to help with physical activity and exercise for those with disabilities. They are listed below.

Athena Archery: this organization provides adapted archery training led by Team USA para archer and 2019 World Championship team coach Erev King.

Athens-Clarke County Therapeutic Recreation: this organization provides a variety of recreational, physical activity, and fitness programing for individuals with disabilities in the local community.

Athens Inclusive Recreation and Sports: this organization fields beep baseball and wheelchair basketball teams and organizes adapted sports and larger community events for individuals with visual impairments and physical disabilities.

Georgia Options: this organization supports independent living among individuals with disabilities in the Athens-Clarke County area.

 Special Olympics: this is an international disability sport organization with an Athens-area site. Special Olympics serves a variety of populations, including older children and adults with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities.

Throughout the state of Georgia, there are other opportunities for individuals with disabilities to get involved with exercise and sport, in both therapeutic and commercial settings.

Shepherd Center: the Shepherd Center offers both sport and fitness exercise opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Blaze Sports: this organization offers many exercise opportunities for veterans with physical disabilities.

Decatur Healing Arts: this organization offers therapeutic yoga classes for adults with a variety of disabilities.

disABILITY LINK: this organization offers gym classes and programs that are personalized.

Allternative Gym: this facility offers fitness therapy services for adults with neurological disorders and stroke.

Power Performance Fitness: this facility offers adapted fitness instruction for adults.
