5. Course Fundamentals

Explore the difference between Rhythm Style tapping and Broadway Style tapping.

  • Understanding soft shoe and how it relates to Broadway Style tapping today.
  • Listening to and exploring different artists and styles of music and determining their roots and purpose.
  • Understanding choreographed arm placements for Broadway Style movement.
  • Find each individual dancers “natural arms” within Rhythm Tapping as well as noting where they are carrying their ‘tension’ or ‘contrenation.’
  • Learning different choreographed combinations in both styles

Musicality and some Music Theory

  • Understand the difference in a whole note, half note, quarter note, 8th note, and 16th note.
  • Be able to identify the difference and use them in relationship to Tap Rhythms.
  • Incorporate body percussion and how it keeps the rhythm of the movement

Body Awareness

  • Working through the different parts of the shoe and which muscles to active to create different sounds.
  • Be able to identify where the sound is coming physically on the shoe.
  • How to move across the floor or in formation and stay within your personal space/spatial awareness.

Improvisation

  • Be able to stay on the beat during Improvisational games.
  • Use different movements and rhythms.
  • Add in Body Percussion.
  • Have fun!
