4. Course Structure
The structure of a jazz class has a number of different elements depending on the style of jazz dance being learned. The order of the elements is often common between styles, but not absolute. Generally, class will consist of the following elements:
- Warm-up
- Specific skill development
- Short combinations
- Longer combinations
- Jumps or leaps
- Cool-down
To follow safe dance practices, a combination of physical and mental preparation is key to minimize potential injury and enhance overall well-being. Getting enough rest, eating an adequate meal prior to class, and staying hydrated are crucial to prepare the body for the physical demands of dance. A proper warm-up is also important and helps to raise the temperature of the body. Oftentimes, the class elements are arranged to music. In jazz dance, the music helps to motivate and inspire the dancer to move. Learn to listen while moving.
