6. Equipment and Attire

Equipment

Dance studios have specific features that enhance the physical learning experience and set them apart from other, more traditional classrooms. One major difference between a dance and a traditional classroom is the floor. Dance floors are sprung, which means they are engineered to enhance performance and reduce injury. The vinyl on the floors is called Marley, and it is delicate and helps to reduce slips while maintaining the grip of a dancer’s foot or footwear. Marley needs to be protected and cared for. Also common in dance studios are mirrors. These aid dancers in their training and performance. Mirrors provide visual feedback for technique, alignment, and self-correction. They also facilitate a better understanding of choreography, particularly in group dances, by enabling dancers to match movements and observe their performance from different angles.

Attire

Proper dance attire takes into account comfort, flexibility, form, footwear, and safety.

Comfort & Flexibility

  • Prioritize movement: dancewear should allow for unrestricted movement and flexibility. Do not wear denim or items that have zippers, belts, or buckles.
  • Breathable fabrics: choose materials like cotton, spandex, or nylon that allow for comfortable movement and reduce moisture during class.
  • Avoid restrictions: clothes that are too tight, too loose, too short, or too long can hinder movement and make you uncomfortable or distracted during the class.

Form-fitting

  • Show body lines: form-fitting clothing allows instructors to see and correct body alignment and posture.
  • Examples: leotards, fitted tops, leggings, dance tights, jogger pants.

Footwear

Safety & Practicality

  • Secure hair: tie back long hair to prevent distractions and maintain a clean line.
  • Minimize accessories: Avoid wearing jewelry that could get caught or be distracting.
  • Layers: Consider wearing layers that can be adjusted to regulate body temperature during warm-up and cool-down.
  • Hygiene: Maintain good personal hygiene and consider bringing a towel or a change of clothes for after class.
