6. Equipment and Attire
Appropriate attire and equipment are essential for both safety and performance. Students are expected to wear clothing that allows free and comfortable movement. This typically includes well-fitting athletic wear or flexible dance attire that stays in place and avoids tripping hazards. Clothing that is too tight, overly loose, or requires constant adjustment should be avoided.
Footwear is especially important. Students are encouraged to wear dance-specific shoes such as ballroom shoes, jazz shoes, or dress shoes (e.g., short heels or oxfords) with slick soles. These types of shoes offer the appropriate level of support, flexibility, and grip for executing smooth dance steps. Casual footwear like sneakers, sandals, boots, or flip-flops is not appropriate, as they can hinder movement or increase the risk of injury.
A refillable water bottle is recommended to stay hydrated during class. No additional equipment is required, but students are encouraged to be mindful of personal hygiene and avoid strong fragrances that could be distracting or uncomfortable for dance partners.
Dressing appropriately not only meets course expectations but also reflects the etiquette and professionalism central to the ballroom dance experience.
